Snorkeling with manta rays at night is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. If you've never done it before, though, it's completely normal to wonder what actually happens once you arrive at the harbor, what it feels like to enter the ocean after dark, and just how close the manta rays may come.
Here's what you can expect from a manta ray night snorkel in Kona — from getting ready on shore to watching these incredible animals glide beneath you.
Before You Get in the Water
Your manta experience begins before the boat ever leaves the harbor.
You'll get fitted with your snorkel gear and receive a safety briefing explaining what to expect in the water, how the experience works, and how to respectfully observe the manta rays.
At Kona Mantas, our tours are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of six guests. This gives our crew more time to help everyone get comfortable with their equipment, answer questions, and prepare for the experience without the feeling of being part of a large crowd.
You should arrive wearing or bringing a swimsuit and be comfortable swimming independently in the ocean.
The Boat Ride Is Surprisingly Short
One thing that surprises many visitors is how close the manta viewing area is to Keauhou Bay.
Our boat ride to the manta viewing site is approximately three minutes.
That means you spend far less time traveling by boat and more of your evening focused on the reason you came — seeing Kona's manta rays.
The short ride can also be especially appealing to families or guests who would rather avoid a long nighttime boat trip.
Entering the Ocean at Night
This is the part that may feel the most unfamiliar at first.
Even experienced snorkelers aren't necessarily accustomed to getting into the Pacific Ocean after dark. That's why your crew prepares you beforehand and helps guests enter the water individually.
Once you're settled in, you'll position yourself at the surface with the group while lights illuminate the water below.
And then the show begins.
Why Are There Lights in the Water?
The lights aren't simply there so you can see.
They help concentrate plankton in the illuminated water. Manta rays are filter feeders, and plankton is one of their primary food sources.
As mantas feed, they may glide, turn and perform graceful barrel rolls through the light below the snorkelers.
It can look almost choreographed — but everything you're watching is natural manta behavior.
How Close Do the Manta Rays Get?
Sometimes, astonishingly close.
A feeding manta may pass just beneath a snorkeler while following concentrations of plankton.
The important thing to remember is that we observe the mantas; we don't chase or touch them.
Manta rays do not have the venomous stinger that people sometimes associate with stingrays. They are filter-feeding animals, and responsible manta encounters focus on passive observation while allowing the animals to choose where they swim.
There's nothing quite like watching an animal with an enormous wingspan glide silently underneath you.
How Long Are You in the Water?
On a Kona Mantas tour, we aim for up to approximately 45 minutes in the water, depending on ocean conditions and the evening's experience.
That's enough time to settle in and actually enjoy the encounter rather than feeling as though you entered the water only to immediately climb back onto the boat.
Because manta rays are wild animals, every evening is different. Some nights the action begins quickly; other nights require a little patience.
That's part of experiencing wildlife in its natural environment.
Is the Water Cold at Night?
Even in Hawaiʻi, people can become chilly when floating relatively still in the ocean at night.
Your personal comfort level will vary, so a wetsuit can be helpful for guests who tend to get cold easily. Kona Mantas has wetsuits available as an optional rental.
Being comfortable matters — you want to spend your time watching the mantas rather than thinking about the temperature.
Can You Take Photos and Video?
Yes, but don't let your camera become the entire experience.
Underwater cameras can capture incredible footage during a manta encounter, especially when the animals pass through the illuminated water.
If you don't have an underwater camera, Kona Mantas also offers GoPro and Insta360 rentals.
Our favorite advice? Get your footage — and then put the camera down for a while.
Seeing a manta ray glide underneath you with your own eyes is very different from seeing it later through a screen.
Is a Manta Ray Night Snorkel Good for Families?
It can be an incredible family experience, but everyone entering the water should be comfortable swimming independently.
Night snorkeling is different from standing in a swimming pool or snorkeling in shallow water during the daytime. You're in the open ocean after dark, so basic swimming ability and confidence in the water are important.
Our small-group format also means our crew can provide a much more personal experience than you'd typically receive in a large tour group.
What If No Manta Rays Show Up?
This is wildlife, not an aquarium.
No ethical operator can control where a manta ray decides to swim on any particular evening.
Kona's manta viewing sites are famous because mantas regularly visit these areas to feed, but sightings can never be treated as something nature owes us.
That unpredictability is also part of what makes the moment so special when the first manta appears beneath you.

It's difficult to explain the scale of a manta ray until you're floating above one.
They're graceful, enormous and strangely peaceful to watch.
